Studies of the human figure were one of my early favourites and remain so to this day. While I have done them in most media, my preference is a basic grey and white palette of medium-to-soft pencil, usually the range between 2H and 2B. This is followed by the use of a piece of chamois leather wrapped around a wooden stylus to blend the individual shading lines into the contiguous tones of grey that delineate the play of light and shadow on skin and fabric. These pieces are usually executed in vignette style, with minimal back-ground, on either Bainbridge S172 illustration board or European chamois paper. |
